  7.     When Elizabeth Taylor couldn't greet reporters outside a
  8. Santa Monica, Calif., hospital last week, she sent a message.
  9. She'd come out and wave to them but "wasn't in her balcony
  10. attire." It was a gallant excuse from the violet-eyed actress,
  11. 58, whose bout with viral pneumonia had landed her in an
  12. intensive-care unit and, her doctor says, put her life briefly
  13. "in jeopardy." When she first became ill, rumors flew that she
  14. had AIDS, but tests proved negative. Though the immediate threat
  15. has passed, the doctor cautioned that Liz is not yet out of the
  16. woods.
